Categories and Repertoire

This year, the Cal-Western Regional Auditions will include the following genres: Commercial Music (CM), Classical Music (CL), Musical Theater (MT) and Hall Johnson Spirituals (HJ).  Information on the first three genres can be found in the documents below. The most recent information for the Hall Johnson competition, including eligibility and repertoire, can be found here.

Certain categories advance to the national auditions: Children, Youth, High School, and College in all categories; post-collegiate in CM and CL; and HJ (students aged 17-23 who are post high school). Categories which don’t advance to the national auditions (“non-advancing”) still participate in all levels of the Regional auditions.

Students perform the same repertoire in all stages of the auditions. Posted below are terminology definitions, category requirements, and rubrics.  Please read all the repertoire and accompaniment requirements carefully as some of them have changed from previous years, especially in Commercial Music.  The full national rules can be found here (pdf).

Please note: a student's category is determined by their age on September 1, 2025. All videos should be recorded after this date.  Please plan accordingly.
